Polis in Potential
The structure and syntax of an image —its surface dimensions and the way space is distributed upon it in order to develop a given premise— are the main elements I investigate in my work Polis in Potential.
Following the Fibonacci ratio —both in the horizontal and vertical layout— and starting from the idea that a surface can be subdivided in various ways, thereby generating corresponding visual conditions, I applied in my work a dual relationship: from left to right (→) and from top to bottom (↓), according to the Western mode of reading.
In the four independent sections, and through the vertical sequence (↓) 1, 2, 3, 5, the pictorial narrative of a city begins — from the minimal unfolding of a dichotomic diagram to the segmented depiction of ground plans, much like the construction of a multistory building or the spatial organization of a city’s constituent parts.
In the horizontal arrangement of each part (→) 1, 2, 3, 5, 3, 2, 1, the evolution of the image progresses from the simple to the complex and from the sparse to the dense.
Thus, I remove the compositional weight from the center (the measure of symmetry) or other balancing relations, and I dare to pursue a parallel, dual course for the image — one in which its structure diverges from its morphoplastic analysis.
For me, this constitutes a potential city — a Polis in Potential.
